Valerie's Belfair WA Real Estate Blog: This is not a pipe dream....this is my business..There's a time to play and a time to work...

This is not a pipe dream....this is my business..There's a time to play and a time to work...

This is not a pipe dream... This is my business and a lot of my life....and I LOVE IT and I wouldn't trade it for anything.... well ok maybe retirement and riding my Harley.

The last week has been a crazy week, both in business and personal items that needed addressing. It's given me a lot to think about (although not much time to think about it); especially, how I run and want my business to continue.

I have always considered my work in real estate as my own business - not a job; and treated it as such. It is what I DO.  I treat it as a business as well and that means at times (a lot of times) putting in hours when others wouldn't and don't.

Someone asked me why?

Customer service is important in my business, in order to provide the best service I need to be available when they need me!

Because this is not a pipe dream of mine. This is my career; MY Business.  and holidays and weekends when people have time off from work to look at homes and need information about the area, is when they NEED me.  A good business keeps the storefront open during prime time opportunity;  And that prime time opportunity can sometimes be huge during a holiday or weekend when others are playing.

Open for Business

I accommodate customers and clients as much as I can, otherwise I would more than likely be OUT OF BUSINESS!

There's a time to play and a time for business. This is by no means a regular 9 to 5 - Monday through Friday job. If you treat it like that and only keep the storefront open during those times- you are missing out on a lot of opportunity and success.

Don't get me wrong! I will have some downtime, but my business is built on customer service and it is during other people's "play time" that is my work time.

It is a business and needs to be treated as such. Except for 7-11 most businesses have a down time which is necessary for re-charging the batteries. It all works together: customer service, rest, responsibility to ones business and family.

Gary - exactly - it can be a balancing act, but if you are not available during opportune times then you are missing opportunity! THanks for stopping by!

In this business you could easily work 12-14 hour days 7 days a week...then you experience burn-out.  It is very important to take a day off to have for yourself to rest and relax!  Spend time with your family and have a life.  It will make you a better Realtor.

Sandra - SO True - very important to make sure there is play time in there for yourself, but also don't lose sight of the "opportune" times! Balancing it out can be a challenge but well worth it! THanks for stopping in!

Valerie: Thanks for the post. We need to be on if we're committed and in it for the long haul. That being said, I was just at our lake cabin for 5 days with little or no cell. reception. Every once in a while, we need to walk away and recharge. A healthy balance works for me! Thanks again!

Valerie, I truly believe 'balance' is so important.  If we work too much, we will be too tired, cranky, not focused etc.  We all need to have a well balanced life.  Work hard, play hard.  If you are not happy with your personal life, you can't be happy at work either.  Great post, Valerie!  Thanks!

Yuno - yes balance is SOOO important. There are days we can be completely overwhelmed if we are not careful! Taking time for ourselves as well keeps us fresh and ready to go! Thanks for stopping in!

I am a firm believer that you work hard and you can play harder. In this profession, it is very important to have me and family time. You can't forget about your family and you can't forget about your health. You can only run but so much before your body tells you to slow down or it will slow itself down for you. That usually means getting sick. Nice to meet you Valerie.
